Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Atlas-compatible underlayment and decking repair materials across Jacksonville, with most deck repair jobs running $650 to $2,800 depending on how much decking has rotted and whether the underlayment needs full replacement. Our trucks carry Atlas WeatherMaster and Summit underlayment, plus CDX and OSB decking in the common thicknesses, so we can usually get your repair done in a single visit. The way most homeowners discover this problem is the same: a soft spot near a valley, a ceiling stain that keeps coming back, or shingles that won’t lay flat no matter how many times they’re renailed.
Which Atlas Models This Applies To
The underlayment beneath an Atlas roof is independent of the shingle line above it, but there are compatibility rules worth knowing. Atlas Pinnacle Pristine and StormMaster Shake roofs both sit on either synthetic underlayment or #30 felt, depending on when the roof was installed and which Jacksonville crew put it on. If your roof has Atlas’s HP42 or WeatherMaster synthetic, the good news is that it handles Florida humidity better than old felt: it won’t absorb moisture, wrinkle, or break down the way felt does after ten years of Jacksonville summers. The gotcha comes with older Atlas roofs from the early 2000s. Many of those used #15 felt, and #15 felt under a shingle roof in this climate lasts maybe twelve to fifteen years before it starts to degrade. If you pull up a shingle and the underlayment looks like brittle brown paper with cracks, that’s #15 felt at the end of its life.
For decking, the Atlas product itself isn’t the deck; the deck is the wood sheathing beneath whatever underlayment and shingle system you have. We match the decking to what’s already up there: 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch CDX plywood on most homes, or 7/16-inch OSB on newer construction. The key measurement is thickness. If your house has 5/8-inch decking and someone patches it with 1/2-inch, the shingles won’t seat properly at the seam, and you’ll see a visible dip from the ground. We always measure before we order the plywood for a repair, because guessing is how roofs get wavy.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for underlayment: Atlas’s branded synthetic underlayment is a solid product, but it’s not the only one that meets code and performs well under Atlas shingles. We install Atlas underlayment when the customer wants factory-matched, and we also carry GAF and CertainTeed synthetics that meet the same ASTM standards at a lower price point. The shingle warranty doesn’t require Atlas underlayment beneath it, and we’ll tell you that straight.

Signs Your Atlas Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Soft spots on the roof deck when you walk it. This means the plywood or OSB has absorbed moisture and started to delaminate. In Jacksonville, it usually traces back to a slow leak at a pipe boot or valley that’s been running under the shingles for a year or longer.
- Shingles that ripple or bubble even after renailing. When underlayment wrinkles, the shingles above it can’t sit flush. A ripple that won’t nail flat is a sign the underlayment has shifted or buckled from trapped moisture.
- Water stains on ceilings below the roofline that reappear after repainting. By the time water shows up on your drywall, it’s already soaked through the decking above. The stain you’re repainting is the last stop on a leak that’s been active up top for a while.
- Visible daylight in the attic through the decking. If you can see pinpoints of light between the boards, the decking has gaps or rot, and the underlayment above it is compromised. This is most common on older homes in Murray Hill and Riverside where the original decking is still in place.
- Granules in your gutters along with cracked, curling shingles. Granule loss alone is normal wear, but combined with curling shingles it indicates the roof system is overheating. The underlayment bakes underneath, and once it dries out, it cracks exactly the way old felt does when you fold it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Jacksonville homeowners, Atlas underlayment replacement runs $0.55 to $0.85 per square foot when installed as part of a larger reroof. Standalone spot repairs like a valley or pipe-collar area run $400 to $900. Decking replacement costs more because it’s structural: $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot for the decking alone, materials and labor included, with most partial deck replacements in Jacksonville landing between $650 and $2,800. The things that move the price are access (a steep pitch on a two-story colonial costs more than a walkable 4/12 ranch in Arlington), the amount of rot we find once the shingles come off, and whether you need a full perimeter seam re-taped or just a localized patch.
Every quote is written before work starts. You’ll see the line-item cost for materials, labor, and disposal, and that price doesn’t move at the door. The work is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: in writing, for one full year, with a free return visit if the repair or installation fails within that period.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do one thing from the ground: look for shingle patches that don’t sit flat, check your gutters for unusual granule buildup, and scan the ceiling in your top-floor rooms after a hard Jacksonville rain. The rest of this job belongs on a roof with fall protection and someone who’s done it before. Walking a rotted deck is how people put a foot through the sheathing and into the attic, and a fall from even a single-story eave causes real injuries. Decking and underlayment work also involves pulling shingles in a way that keeps the surrounding roof watertight when you’re done. Get the pattern wrong and you’ve created a new leak at the repair boundary. If you want to talk through what you’re seeing, call (904) 719-6346 and describe the symptom. We’ll tell you what it likely is and what it likely costs before we ever schedule a visit.
FAQs
Atlas synthetic underlayment lasts 25 to 40 years, while old #15 felt typically lasts 12 to 15 years in Jacksonville’s heat and humidity before it becomes brittle and loses its water-shedding ability. If your roof is over 15 years old and you don’t know what’s underneath, it’s worth a deck-level inspection before you replace shingles only. Call (904) 719-6346 and we’ll give you an honest read.
Yes, we can spot-repair underlayment at valleys, penetrations, and edges without tearing off the entire roof, but only if the surrounding underlayment is still intact and the decking below it is sound. If the underlayment has failed in one spot, it’s often a sign the whole layer is near the end of its service life, and we’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing and put a dollar range on both options before you decide.
A typical underlayment and deck repair on a Jacksonville home takes one day for most spot repairs, and up to two days if we’re replacing a large section of decking and re-taping seams. Weather delays happen, but we schedule repairs around the forecast and don’t leave a torn-off section unprotected overnight. Call (904) 719-6346 to get on the schedule.
Yes, our trucks carry Atlas WeatherMaster and Summit synthetic underlayment, plus GAF and CertainTeed equivalents, along with CDX plywood and OSB decking in the standard thicknesses. If your repair needs a less common size, we’ll have it staged and ready before we show up, so the work isn’t stalled waiting on material.
